Spring Cleaning

Everyone’s heard of spring cleaning and some of us still attempt it.  But what is the history of spring cleaning?  Back in the day when houses were heated with wood or coal burning stoves and fireplaces, the soot, smoke and grime that accumulated during the winter months would be scrubbed away when the weather broke.  Furniture, curtains, rugs and all furnishings were removed from the home and everything-floors, walls, ceiling, and fireplace were scrubbed clean.  Rugs and bedding were beaten, clothes and curtains washed.  This intense cleaning was an eagerly anticipated spring ritual because it meant that the wood stove could be silenced and the windows opened to the fresh outdoors.

Fast forward to 2009.  How can you bring spring into your home?
  • Put a plan together.
  • Make a to-do list and prioritize it.
  • Identify which are do-it-yourself items and which ones require help.  Help can come in the form of friends and family or outside professionals.
  • Assessing what you own.
  • Let go of items that are
    • broken.
    • out grown.
    • out dated.
    • no longer useful for the life you are living now.
Some spring cleaning tips and ideas from the Simplicity Team:
Remove any dead plants, debris, or weeds.
Rake away any leftover leaves.
Wash outdoor light fixtures and replace bulbs.
Clear gutters.
Inspect all of your winter shoes and get any worn shoes polished, re-heeled and repaired.
Inspect all of your winter coats, sweaters and slacks and repair any missing buttons, tears or loose hems.
Wash or dry clean all of your winter clothes.
Clean fireplace and chimney.
Replace all HVAC filters.
Wash windows inside and out.
Dust your light bulbs. You'll be amazed at how much brighter the light will be.
A paste made of white vinegar and salt cleans brass
beautifully.  It's cheap and eco-friendly. Rub it on with a soft
cloth and rinse in hot water.  Dry immediately. Tarnish gone!
Have carpets steam cleaned.
Clean rugs, draperies, and upholstery.
Clean out refrigerator. Toss expired foods or items you cannot identify. Remove all food and put in cooler or freezer while wiping down interior surfaces with a non-toxic cleaner. Dry with paper towels and return food items to fridge.
Clean your bed and bedding. Vacuum mattress to remove dust, dander and dust mites. Flip mattress. Replace or clean pillows, following manufacturer's instructions.  Wash or dry clean comforters, blankets and duvet covers.
Replace batteries in smoke alarms yearly. If alarms are over ten years old, replace units, too.

Simplicity Spring Cleans Garages, Storage Units & Attics

Projects in garages and attics are reserved for the Spring and Fall months, when the temperatures are conducive to working in non-climate controlled areas.  April and May are prime times to organize your garage, tool shed or attic, and if you are planning on using Simplicity for any of these spaces, please contact us now to schedule your needs assessment.  Remember, we can also supply the wire shelving and clear, lidded containers that can transform your storage areas from messy to marvelous!

Recycling

When we think of recycling, the red bin comes immediately to mind.  And we encourage you to always recycle your papers, plastics, glass and cans.  For a primer on what can and cannot go in the recycle bins, visit,
http://curbit.charmeck.org.

But there are lots of other methods of recycling.  Donating or handing down clothes, toys, books, and household items that your family no longer wants or needs is another form of recycling. Look around your house for items that are just gathering dust and try to find a way to put them to work.  Turn unwanted items into cash with Craig’s List and EBay. Or post items you no longer want on Free Cycle www.freecycle.org and people in your community can benefit from them for free.

A good rule of thumb when surveying your possessions- if you haven’t used it in the past year, you’re probably never going to use it.  Which leads us to our final topic for this month.

Rightsizing Your Life

We’re excited about this relatively new menu item from Simplicity.  Rightsizing goes beyond the basic organizational services we’ve offered since our founding.  If you’re planning to move, on the verge of welcoming home a boomerang child or aging parent, or simply want to reconfigure the way you live in your current home, Rightsizing is for you!  We’ll make a thorough assessment of what’s working and what’s not.  We’ll help you figure out what to keep and what to purge.  We’ll properly organize and contain the keepers.  Rightsizing works because it addresses the parallel goals of form and function.  Simplicity will make what seems like a daunting task, manageable, by tailoring the program to fit your specific requirements.

So whether you’re ready for a seasonal spruce up, a whole house overhaul, or a rightsized life, Simplicity is just a call or a click away.
